Nelson Products

The Nelson Liquid Drive is a heavy-duty power transmission designed for use in continuous operating installations demanding a high level of reliability. It is an efficient, simple and reliable device for controlling speed or toque and acceleration of driven equipment.

Nelson fluid drives allow the use of standard design motors without the need for less efficient, high starting torque motor designs. The Nelson Liquid Drive provides infinite variable speed with the proper cooling, no-load starts, smooth application of torque, ability to balance loads between multiple drives and will not transmit shock loads.

Our Technology, the Mainstay of the Nelson Drive

The Nelson Liquid Drive is a hydro-kinetic power transmission. The basic Nelson Liquid drive concept of transferring energy or power is dependent upon the employment of hydro-kinetic principals. Consequently, it transfers power by imparting, and subsequently removing, kinetic energy from a liquid medium contained within the functional elements of the transmission. It is the application of these hydro-kinetic principles that permit the Nelson Liquid Drive to control output, speed and power.

  1. Provide No-Load Starting

    • Since starting load requirements are greatly reduced, you can use a more economical starting system. Less expensive motors can be selected based on running loads rather than starting loads. Normal torque motors may be used.
  2. Infinitely Variable Speed Control

    • Of driven equipment through a wide range of speeds.
  3. Protection from Shock and Vibration

    • Nelson Liquid Drives protect driver and driven equipment from initial starting shock and running vibration. To our customers, this means lighter duty gears, drivetrains and cost reduction.
  4. Torque Limiting Capabilities

    • Provide drivetrain or driven equipment protection.
  5. Minimize Starter, Motor and Geartrain Wear

    • If the process requires intermittent driven machine operation. Rapid declutching eliminates demand charges, shocks and wear and tear.
  6. Automatic or Manual Control

    • Nelson Liquid Drives can be easily adapted to either manual or completely automatic control.
  7. Controlled Acceleration or Deceleration

    • Nelson Liquid Drives can control the rate of acceleration or deceleration of driven equipment once the driver reaches full speed.
  8. Minimize Horsepower Requirements

    • On centrifugal equipment by supplying flow requirements rather than throttling at full speed.
  9. Minimize Driven Machine Maintenance, Wear and Noise

    • Since driven machines often run at reduced speed.
  10. Ruggedness and Reliability Second to None

    • A Nelson Liquid Drive’s construction assures rigidity and internal component alignment. And, since the only wear parts are bearings and seals, we use only high-quality bearings and seals designed for long life.
